Dying to Forget *
The other day, I talked about how writing in present tense is a sign of a beginner and amateur. I still mean it. And that’s why I almost didn’t continue with this novel. Even so, I dug in, and here, present tense works somewhat. That’s because of the special location where the novel takes place, and because of the topic itself. More about that in a moment.
I often get notifications about free ebooks on Amazon. And yes, it’s part of Amazon’s marketing strategy to give away books for a day, to gain a larger readership. These days, I’ve gotten a little smarter and check reviews before I grab a book, even if it’s for free. Continue reading

Neulich habe ich ja mal ein wenig über das Schreiben im Präsens hergezogen. Nun habe ich letzte Woche einen kleinen Roman im Präsens gelesen – und es hat ganz gut funktioniert. Das lag unter anderem an dem Ort, wo dieser Roman spielt, und natürlich auch etwas am Thema. Mehr dazu gleich.
Ich bekomme häufig Informationen und Werbung für Ebooks, die für einen Tag kostenlos bei Amazon angeboten werden. Inzwischen bin ich ja etwas schlauer geworden und schaue mir die Rezensionen an, bevor ich so ein Ebook “kaufe”. Continue reading

Well, this is another rant. Kinda sorta. You see, every time when I see another creepy horror cover on Facebook, every time I see a gruesome face covered in blood, every time I see more nightmarish creatures advertising a book, the same question pops up in my mind:
Why?
Why are there people who like this? Why are there people who write stories I would never ever think of in my worst nightmare? Who creates covers that literally make me feel sick? And posts them on Facebook? Continue reading

Jetzt muss es doch mal raus. Jedes Mal, wenn ich bei Facebook wieder ein neues Horror-Cover sehe, jedes Mal, wenn wieder Blut über Gesichter strömt, jedes Mal, wenn ich wieder albtraumhafte Gestalten erblickte, frage ich mich:
Warum?
Warum gibt es Menschen, die so etwas mögen? Die sich Geschichten ausdenken, die mir nicht einmal in den schlimmsten Albträumen einfallen würden? Wer gestaltet Cover, bei denen mir manchmal regelrecht schlecht wird? Und postet sie stolz auf Facebook? Continue reading

Once again, a novel served as inspiration for this blog post. And once again it wasn’t in a good way, so novel and author shall remain unnamed. This time, we’re talking about sex. In books. And in an abstract way. (Yes, it should be work safe.)
Some level of sex is part of most novels. And I readily admit that I love romantic fantasy and enjoy it when the heroes end up in bed together at the end. Yet once again, the devil is in the detail. Continue reading

Auch hier dient wieder ein Roman als Inspiration … wenn auch mal wieder nicht im guten Sinne. Deswegen bleibt er auch ungenannt. Diesmal geht es um Sex. In Büchern. Sozusagen abstrakt.

… that’s what Egilbert is. He is the archivist of Lar Elien.
I always envision him wearing a grey habit, not sure why. He has grey hair, is rather impatient and dislikes women. The libary is his home, high up in one of the towers of Lar Elien.
Egilbert doesn’t appear often in my Lar Elien tales, mostly because I had to rewrite the first novel, cutting out many scenes of Andert’s early years. And thus I also had to eliminate the scene where Andert gets his first writing lesson with Egilbert – which soured quickly for both of them. But you’ll get to see this outtake, in a quick translation. Continue reading

Ich sehe ihn immer in einer grauen Kutte vor mir, keine Ahnung warum. Er ist grauhaarig, ungeduldig und mag keine Frauen. Meistens sitzt er in seiner Bibliothek, die einen Raum in einem der Türme von Lar Elien einnimmt.
Viele Auftritte hat er bislang nicht in meinen Romanen, vor allem, weil einige Szenen mit ihm entfielen, als ich den ersten Band umgeschrieben habe. Klein Andert taucht nun nicht mehr auf, und so wurde auch die Geschichte von Anderts erster Schreibstunde mit Egilbert leider herausgeschnitten. Aber für euch krame ich sie wieder hervor.
